Mandela Burial: Icon’s body arrives in Qunu home
………. stance by making his contribution to mankind through the personality with which he was blessed. There will never be another like him.
The national flag was replaced by a lion skin, the traditional symbol of his Xhosa people. As evening fell, tribal leaders and men from his family honoured their father, their “Tata”, their very own member of the Thembu clan.
And the last night was spent in his own bedroom that overlooked the hills and the place where all of those waiting for him on the other side rested their physical bodies from the stresses of earth life.
Among the mourners who attended the funeral yesterday were Oprah Winfrey, Prince Charles, The Clintons, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Gerry Adams, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu alongside Mandela family and friends who swelled the population of Qunu for the hours needed to make their last farewells.
As tradition goes, he was buried before midday , “when the sun is at its highest and the shadow is at its lowest” giving his spirit the freedom to join with his ancestors. 95 candles, each one representing each of his earthly years stood vigil in his final moments in the public arena. The opening hymn was Fulfill Your Promise followed by the Good and Faithful Servants Parable. Ahmed Kathrada, his long time companion from the many years of incarceration spoke of their deep and eternal friendship. Granddaughter Nandi Mandela spoke on behalf of all the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Nelson Mandela was certainly someone who was sent here to make a difference.
And He did.
